Multilingual Intercultural Media Competence for Translators/Interpreters and
Journalists



Whether there is a European public sphere or not has been the topic of
innumerable podium discussions, lectures, articles and debates for a couple
of years now. One thing has not changed, though: in trying to understand our
European neighbours, we keep seeing things from our national and cultural
point of view.

The political entity we call Europe does not speak one common language and is still
the "Europe of the elites" it has always been: English serves as the lingua
franca in politics, the arts, sciences Europe is still alien to most Europeans, since the national media - newspapers,
radio, TV, online magazines, and so forth - report on international events
from the national point of view.

Translators, interpreters and journalists thus form an interface between
the different cultures. An increasing number of them have started to take a
closer look at their home countries from a different angle. For this, it
takes background knowledge of the different cultures in Europe, of
intercultural communication and the various European media. Our
guest lecturers, who are professional journalists, will introduce their
media, their different new approaches - especially as to online magazines -
aiming at bridging the gaps between the numerous European societies to shape a common
one and will report on their daily "European job".
